The fertile alluvial soil in India ensures that the undemanding jute plant does not need to be fertilized. This is an advantage for the environment and an economic advantage for the farmers compared to the intensive cotton cultivation.
The jute plant is often still cultivated in small-scale farming in rotation with other crops, which means that, unlike large monocultures, little or no pesticides are needed for cultivation. The farmers can also reuse the seeds of the plant in the classical way for the cultivation of the next generation.
Outside the growth period for jute, the farmers use the fields for other plants. This protects the soil and makes the farmers more independent as they do not grow only one plant variety. All together, these aspects make jute fibre an unbeatable ecologically sustainable product that ensures the livelihood of many small farmers in the rural poor regions of East India and Bangladesh.
